General Overview Scotchgard® and other Fabric Protectors
Scotchgard ® is a registered trademark of the 3M corporation. It is a top quality protector for applying to carpets and some upholstery. (Scotchgard® may not be suitable for application to certain natural upholstered fabrics, and for these there are a wide variety of top quality DuPont Teflon® products carried in solvent bases available for applying at a higher cost.) When you purchase Scotchgard ® protection for your carpet from an applicator who is licensed by 3M, you can obtain a one year warranty that is honored directly through 3M and not the applicating company. Unfortunately, Scotchgard ® is a word that many people use in the same way we use words like "Xerox ®" or "Kleenex®," which are in fact specific company names, but are often misused to refer to similar products manufactured by other companies. The problem is that many inferior low-cost protectors are being offered to the consumer simply as "Scotchgard." The real 3M Scotchgard and available warranties have true cash value, and it is unlikely that any "too good to be true" offer of free or bargain-priced protection offered by a cleaning company is a quality application of the necessary strength to be effective. Most Americans are familiar with the expression "You get what you pay for...."
